I Thought That I Couldn't Do It Myself
When I was in high school, typing was not considered a necessary...let alone useful...skill for students who were expected to go on to university.In all honesty, I never thought about the usefulness of typing as a skill until I started working in an office. If I thought about it at all, it was a skill that other people had and used.
Whenever I randomly pecked away at typewriters, I never thought I could learn to use the crazy arrangement of the keys.
Looking back, I now realize that what kept me from typing as not the crazy arrangement of the keys.
It was in fact my own attitude towards the skill.
Typing was something that I could not possibly learn. And besides, if I needed any typing done, there were other people who could do it for me.
Unfortunately when I learned to type, I only learned the skill.
I learned nothing about how attitudes could be changed.
I Wanted A Website
With the growth of the Internet I too wanted my own website. But like typing, I thought it was something that I could not do for myself.Fortunately there were other people who could do it for me.
So I hired a graphic designer and her website-designer husband to develop a website for me.
Following my guidelines and instructions, they developed a site that looked really good.
But from the perspectives of Internet marketing and ease of use, it was an unmitigated disaster.
So I went back to go and found a new web designer. This time around, I researched Internet marketing including search engine optimization.
My hope was that at the very least, I could have given the new designer some decent and meaningful instructions.
Help For 'Non-Technical' People
It was during this research that I came across Site Sell, the producer of SBI.
In a nutshell, SBI
software helps
'non-technical' people...as I considered myself...design, build,
promote and maintain their own websites. Long story short...the SBI system works and works very well.
Like learning to type, learning to build and maintain my own website was much less difficult than I had convinced myself it would be.
Also like learning to type, learning to develop my own website meant that I was no longer dependent upon others to help me get my ideas and words into a written format...this time online.
There were however two very significant differences.
When I learned to type, it was just me and my typewriter.
However, when I learned to develop my website, there was huge range of resources available to help.
These resources include video and written instruction step-by-step material, online help, personalized support and very active users' forums.

As good as the SBI system is, there is one aspect of building my own website that is even better.It helped me overcome my own attitude that led me to believe that although I wanted a website, it was something that I could not do for myself.
Hmmm. I wonder how many other things I have convinced myself that I cannot do...but can in fact probably learn to do.
