Your Achievement Resume Converts Your Experience Into Client Benefits

Your achievement resume outlines your achievements and tells potential clients how they can benefit from your experience.

Resumes..Good Better & The Best

If you have ever applied for a job or hired some one for a job, you will understand the role that a resume plays in the process.

A resume is a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience.

For job-seekers, a resume summarizes and presents their past work experience as qualifications for a new job.

Employers will use a resume as a tool to assess a candidate's ability to perform a job to be filled.

A good resume details an individual's job history.

Better resumes detail specific skills and experience that individuals gained while performing various job functions.

The best resumes summarize an individual's achievements...and suggests how these achievement can benefit potential employers.

This type of resume might be called an achievement resume which contains two key elements:

  1. a brief written account of your achievements
  2. suggestions as to how employers can benefit from your experience
Very useful for experienced job-seekers an achievement resume can be a powerful marketing tool if you are self-employed or run your own business providing personal or professional services.

The simplest approach is to divide the task in 4 sub-tasks or steps.

Step 1: What Are Your Major Achievements?

This step involves making as comprehensive list as possible of all of your significant achievements.

As long as an individual accomplishment meets your definition of achievement, include it in your list.

To learn more about identifying achievements, see Resume Achievements.

When compiling your list, be sure to include achievements from such areas as:
  • training and education
  • work activities
  • personal achievements
  • social and community service

Step 2:  How Did You Achieve These Results?

What personal skills and talents did you employ to achieve these results?

What other resources did you employ to achieve these results?

Step 3: How Can Potential Clients Benefit From Your Achievements?

The best achievements are those that can be duplicated for your own benefit or the benefit of others.

Review your achievements to identify those accomplishments that meet the following criteria:
  • can be duplicated
  • can benefit you
  • can benefit clients
Once you have finished this review, prioritize your achievements based on the above the criteria.

The absolute best..i.e. top priority...achievements are those that you can duplicate and which can benefit clients by meeting specific needs and wants.

Step 4: Putting It All Together

Once you have identified your top 5-10 achievements, list reword them so they start with a specific client benefit, which will be followed by details of your achievement.

For example instead of saying:

"I have been an interior designer for more than 10 years. I can help you decorate your home."

Say something like:

"You will enjoy a uniquely designed home environment...just as I have helped more than 100 people personalize their homes to reflect their own tastes and preferences. "

Instead of simply using the title 'Achievement Resume' try a headline such as “How You Too Can Benefit From My Achievements'

Prospective clients will me more interested in learning about how you can hekp than them than reading what appears to be your self-serving bragging.
