What Is
Your Desire?
Desire:
something that promises
satisfaction when
it's achieved
”Desire is the
common thread of successful people.
"If
you don’t have this passion and will to realize your vision of
what you want to in
life, you’re unlikely to achieve your goals."
Ken McLachlan
A Burning Desire
Ken McLachlan is Broker/Owner
of RE/MAX Hallmark Realty
Ltd.--the largest
RE/MAX
company in Toronto with 475 agents in 6 offices.
He credits his
success in real estate to his
burning desire:
“I
remember as a
kid, I knew without question that I would be a success. That longing
was embedded deep inside of me.
"If
I didn’t
have that, there’s no way that I would be where I am today.
“Imagination leads to the
actions necessary to bring
about the results that you want. Your craving for
success is so intrinsic
to
your very being that there’s no doubt in your mind that you’re
going to achieve the outcome you want.
"It
means doing whatever it
takes to achieve your goals, having what it takes to walk over
burning coals to get where you want to be.
"On the
other hand, a wish or hope is
largely a
fantasy, more of a passing fancy.
"It’s like
thinking ‘wouldn’t
it be nice if I quit smoking ’
or ‘wouldn’t it be nice if I was
a top producer ’ without
being prepared to take the necessary
actions to achieve these results.
“I
don’t think
you can instill desire in someone that doesn’t have it.
You
can
help them mold it and nurture it but if they don’t have the longing to
succeed,
you can’t make them passionate about something.
"You
can open their
eyes to the possibilities of being great in their careers, but you
can’t infuse them with the passion they
lack.
"That
drive to succeed is the willingness to achieve something and
make
it bigger. It’s like the pilot light in the furnace. If the pilot
light isn’t on, nothing happens.”

It's About
Achieving Your Goals
Your
goals reflect results that you would like to achieve.
Achieving these
results should satisfy you—positively, completely and with no doubt
whatsoever.
Total
satisfaction is the obvious and ultimate reality check for your
goals.
It's also really simple...try it out:
Assuming
the currency and soundness of your goals, how satisfied will you be
when you have achieved them?
If
these results existed right now how satisfied would you be?
Unless
you get a 100% satisfaction rating on your goals, it's a good idea to
rework them until you achieve this level.
Few
if any goals are self-achieving.
You also need a total, positive and
complete commitment to doing whatever it
takes to achieve your
goals.
How
strong is your commitment? How strong must it be?
Napoleon
Hill suggests a very high standard. In Think and
Grow Rich he tells
us:
“Every
person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships
and cut all sources of retreat.
"Only by so doing, can one be sure of
maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win,
essential to success.”
Do
you have having what it takes to walk over burning coals to achieve
results that will totally satisfy you?

Also About Achieving What YOU Value
Talented and ambitious people frequently face conflicting sets
of expectations.
On
the one hand there are the expectations that others--family,
friends, peer group etc.--have of the results results we
should
achieve.
The Jazz
Singer, a 1980 movie based on the life of
singer/songwriter Neil Diamond, illustrates this conflict.
In
the movie, the singer's father, a 4th generation Jewish Cantor, expects
his son to continue the family tradition and pursue his calling as a
5th generation Cantor.
For his part, the son, played by Neil Diamond, wishes to pursue his
dream of becoming a pop star.
Needless
to say the conflict between son and father is very intense. (To learn
how the conflict is resolved, check out the movie..well worth renting
the DVD.)
Few of us experience conflicts of this intensity.
However, most of us experience conflict of some kind in setting and
pursuing our goals.
If you value such qualities as harmony, loyalty and satisfying
others, you will have no trouble aligning your goals to
please other people.
If however, you value qualities such as change, independence
and self-reliance, it
will be difficult to please those people who expect different things
from you.
If you are not absolutely sure what you value and desire, it is well worth
investing the time to clarify your thinking.
