You Really Can Publish A BookIf you would like to publish a book, maybe I can help. Many people would like to write a book...from scratch or based on other work such blog posts and newsletters. ![]() I frequently hear about these dreams when people find out that several of my books have been published by major publishers. In many cases, their interest in writing a book increases when they learn that I have also self published my own books...and helped others publish their own books. From A Default Decision To Best-Seller StatusBy way of explanation, self publishing was never something I had ever dreamed about or considered.I totally struck out at getting a publishing company interested in my first book idea. This meant that if I wanted my book published...which I did...I would have had to publish it myself. As a result, self publishing became my best option by default. In preparing to publish my first book, I
thoroughly researched self
publishing. Because this was PI (pre-Internet), I spent a lot of time in libraries. I wanted to learn everything I could about all stages of book publishing. Long story short...my research paid off and my first book was conceived, written, edited, printed, marketed and distributed. Happily it became a best-seller. What a great way to launch my writing career! Top Right Out Of The BlueAs I was writing my first book, a friend told me that she wanted to write a book about her life story. Born
in the Caribbean island of Nevis and raised in nearby St.
Kitts, she moved to Toronto in her early 20s.Once settled in Toronto, she became the unofficial St. Kitts- Nevis welcoming committee of 1, helping newcomers from those islands get settled in Canada. Interested in her story, I agreed to help with her book. One early purchaser of my friend's book was her primary school teacher, who passed the book on to her niece...a nurse who wanted to write a cook book. This connection led to my second 'assisted self publishing' project. Unintentionally, I started a new service offering...helping others self publish the books they want to write. Top So it continued. From time to time new opportunities and requests to help potential authors publish a book popped up right out of the blue. For the most part, these were empty opportunities. Many people think they have great ideas for a book. However when it comes to actually committing the resources to working on an book to completion, most wanna-be writers people prefer the dream of writing a book to the reality of making it happen. For those few who have successfully undertaken and completed writing a book, it has been a thoroughly rewarding experience...both for them and for me. ![]() The most recent project on which I helped an author prepare a hard cover book is Catch The Gold Ring as described on the page that outlines the benefits of self publishing. The most recent project on which I helped an author prepare a book based on his blog is described here: From Blog To Book Format: How It Can Be Done. As for e-books that I have self published, they can be found in the list of e-books. Top Lessons LearnedReflecting on my my self publishing journey to date, there are several conclusions I can draw.1. Self Publishing Is A Good Fit
The first is that the process of self publishing...either for myself
or helping some one else...is a perfect match for my skill set.
Not too long ago, I received a greeting card from a member of my family. The front had no picture or image...just the words: 2. Win-Win Outcomes
The second is that by assisting other people self publish a book, I
invariably create win-win outcomes.
Certainly I enjoy working with committed potential authors. And my clients love the experience of realizing their dreams of publishing a book. 3. Alone In My Niche?
Finally, as far as I know, few if any other writers help others self
publish books.
In all honesty, this is more likely the result of my not properly researching the issue than my having a very specialized and unique niche all to myself. But it really doesn't matter. I love writing and self publishing as vehicles for sharing my ideas with others. And by extension, I really enjoy helping others self publishing as vehicles for sharing ideas with others.
